St Helens Town Centre Regeneration Project Has Invested in a Machine Learning Visitor Behaviour Platform to Help with the Town Centre Regeneration Project

The St Helens Town Centre Regeneration Project has invested in Place Informatics Visitor Behaviour Platform to help understand and monitor visitor data to help with the ambitious plans to transform the town centre. The platform provides footfall and visitor insights including catchment areas and comparisons with other town centres allowing the once-in-a-lifetime regeneration projectteam to use data-guided decisions whilst planning this exciting redevelopment.

The project aims to redevelop the town centre into a child and family-friendly, safe and sustainable thriving place for local businesses, shoppers, visitors, and residents. To achieve these ambitious goals St Helens Borough Council is working with the English Cities Fund which has been pioneering placemaking for over 20 years.

The fund has already transformed five vast sites – in cities from Salford to Plymouth – to create new neighbourhoods and generate £1.6 billion in developed value. By utilising the insights from the visitor behaviour platform, the council and fund teams will be able to monitor town centre trends and similar locations to understand how they currently attract visitors, what catchment areas they are from and what services and facilities are currently being used. This valuable

Since 2015, Place Informatics has been at the vanguard of foot traffic data, answering business-critical questions about people’s interactions with various spaces such as town centres, retail outlets, tourist attractions, heritage sites, green spaces, events, and car parks. By harnessing the power of cutting-edge technologies including artificial intelligence and machine learning, the ‘big data’ solutions are helping to revolutionise the industry.

St Helens Borough Council Project Manager, commented, “This important project aims to create a town centre designed to meet the challenges of tomorrow, by delivering a clean, sustainable, and innovative development.

By utilising the Place Informatics platform insights, it will help the team truly understand how the current town centre is performing and being used to help ensure we can offer the right services and facilities in the new project.”

Clive Hall, CEO of Place Informatics, commented, “We are delighted to be working with the Council and Fund teams on this exciting regeneration project. Understanding how the town centre is currently being utilised and also being able to analyse other similar locations will help with the important development.

Our data offers organisations detailed insights to show how town residents, commuters, and tourists or visitors from further afield are behaving on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis and also provide reporting to assess the performance of town centres and destinations.”
